Christianity and the vicious cycle of political hopelessness

For a long time in Christendom, there has been an unfounded nursed notion that, active political engagement is inherently defiled and corrupt, hence Christians who are serious and passionate about the gospel should not be involved. Most Christians are of the view that anything besides pulpit preaching of the gospel is a distraction from the Great Commission. while this sounds religiously true, it is urgently necessary to understand that we believe in a God who cares passionately about His world and the whole of His creation (Jn. 3:16) and is therefore concerned about its affairs such as, how it is governed and who governs it.

The Lord in Matthew 28:18-20, commanded us to go and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to obey God in every area of life. In making disciples of all nations and in all areas, we must also disciple people to make godly decisions about politics and governance. Nevertheless, this is not the stance of many Christians. Some prefer to be indifferent towards governance and the whole process of electioneering. In Nigeria, majority of the active and most influential politicians belong to the ‘other side’ and are at the helms of government, advancing the purpose of their beliefs. That is largely the reason why today, the afflictions of Christians are multiplying all over the country; the incessant harassment of Christian farmers all over the country by Fulani herdsmen, Boko Haram insurgencies, the displacement of Christians from their original villages in Kaduna, Benue, Taraba etc. and many more terrorist actions are few examples.

While some of these persecutions may have their place in awakening the Nigerian church and increasing her thirst for revival, could this have been the original will of our God; that His people have no safe place of worship? These killings and terror attacks might go on and many more may arise simply not because God wants it but because Christianity lacks influence in Nigerian politics. It is not just okay anymore to fold hands and watch helplessly as evil men decide the fate of God’s true children. In this write up, I introduce the term “political hopelessness” to help explain the default condition of an ordinary Christian in Nigeria towards politics. I also try to charge the heart of Nigerian Christians to get involved in politics, lead and establish God’s purpose on earth.

The lack of Christian influence in the Nigerian government has led to a vicious cycle illustrated below:

Most Christians have recoiled from affairs of the government due to past experiences and therefore have developed a default mindset that sees politics and every politician as evil and corrupt. This has consequently engendered borderless political apathy. However, not getting involved does not solve the problem, it only makes Christians to be outnumbered and consequently loose in the elections. So when the elections are over and most of the seats are occupied by non-Christians, we have nobody to represent our interests. No one to stand up and pass bills that protect Christian interests and affairs as evidently displayed in various systematised anarchy unleashed against innocent Christian farmers, villagers, schools or gatherings.

As time went on, we lost our voices and because our voices were lost, our interest were buried! We consequently returned to the beginning of the cycle. And on and on goes the vicious cycle. This cycle has been on for decades in Nigeria and we have consequently settled with a sense of hopelessness having ignorantly concluded that nothing could be done anymore.

Furthermore, many so-called Christian politicians have worsened matters. They come to the churches and kneel on the altars only to get elected and enrich themselves. Such people have lost the trust of the Christian masses for they have helped make them hopeless. Reserved for them in hell is everlasting torment, except they repent and occupy for God.

In order to remedy the situation however, the cycle has to be broken. Christians must begin to deliberately strategize and put trusted people in the right positions. These efforts may not yield immediate results but at least will set the pace for generations to come. The Bible also challenges us in Luke 14: 28 & 31 to first sit and count the cost, and plan. With determination and proper strategy, Christ will rule and God’s counsel will be established. It is necessary that stable government policies that promote the preaching and practice of God’s word at all levels of civil service be implemented. It will be glorious if the government of the day sees and believes in the end time revival of the land and hands over power to the Holy Spirit to move in the lives of citizens. How can this be achieved? To what extent is this achievable? It takes having a sincerely consecrated disciple of Christ to be in power. How else can he/she be in power if not encouraged to accept God’s leading and training, and then get involved in governance?

It is worthy of note that the involvement of Christians in government through the ages is the most vibrant reason why today, we have hospitals, abolition of slavery and the practice of killing twins, modern science, the true understanding of the worth of women, regard for human life, great works of art and literature, a workable system of justice, education for the common human being, the free-enterprise system, etc. A writer tells a story of a Christian minister named John Witherspoon who became president of the College of New Jersey in 1768. While there, Witherspoon taught Biblical principles of government to his students. Of the 478 young men who were graduated during his tenure, 114 became ministers; 13 were state governors; 3 were U. S. Supreme Court judges; 20 were U.S. Senators; 33 were U.S. Congressmen; Aaron Burr, Jr., became Vice-President; and James Madison became President. As a Christian, Witherspoon exerted an enormous influence on the direction of American government. So did Joseph and Daniel during their times in the Bible. These are eloquent testimonies of men whom God used in politics during their time. What makes it different now?

As Christians, we must come to the understanding that God is interested in having His Children take over every sphere of influence even on earth. And we must deliberately determine to make His counsel stand if we truly love Him. The true proof of our love for God and one another lies partly in our participation in politics albeit, with a kingdom mindset. How do we claim to love God if we don’t engage in things that enhance and promote His kingdom? How do we claim to love one another if we don’t participate in the area that most profoundly shapes basic rights and the freedom of others? We must arise, take the bull by the horns and put an end to this vicious cycle of hopelessness. You have the opportunity to influence the world for God if you will only take it.

However, taking the bull by the horns comes with a price. We must realize that this is a mandate worth living for and if need be, worth dying for. We must be ready to loose our lives in pursuit of this mission, bearing in mind that to live is Christ and to die is gain. And also that as long as we remain in the will of God the Father, there shall no evil befall us neither shall any plague come nigh our dwelling, except it be His will. We therefore, must come to a point where our lives mean little in the face of God’s great promises. He has said, “he that loveth his life shall lose it, and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal”. Eternity is the bigger picture. We must be able to give up our lives to pursue Heaven’s mandate. If we do not come to that point, then it is better not to have started. Are we ready to die if need be? Are we ready to say like Daniel and his friends, “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us out of thine hand, But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” We will not compromise. And the Father will fight for us. We have the opportunity to influence the world for God if we will only take it. May God grant us the courage, Amen.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.

FIRST OF, THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER.

Unconditional Love does not eliminate the consequences of Living according to the Dictates of the World. We must tell ourselves the truth. No matter how I claim Gods love for me is unconditional, not once have I escaped the consequences of my wrong doing. I have always had to make restitution for damages I caused in one way or the other, where I have hurt people I have had to apologise, where I have lied I have had to tell the truth, where I have been wrong I have always had to realise either through scolding or lashing out or whatever means correction came, I have had to accept my wrong and repent. ( not just feel or say sorry but actually turn away from doing the damage anymore).
By the virtue of the gifts of Will and Choice God has made us with, we are responsible for every action, word and move we make.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE IS DISCIPLINE.

Unconditional Love does not connote lawlessness or the elimination of necessary chastisement and correction. It is in Hebrews 12 that we are taught very emphatically:

My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.

“Instead, what should we do?!”

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?

“hmmmmm, Good question…”

If you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.

“..no kidding!!!”

Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it.

“True true, true that…”

How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!

They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.

“Gbam!!!”

Its all there honestly, I don’t need to stress it more than already stated. Unconditional Love will discipline you and prove you and wash you and refine you until you come out as gold.

By the way any one who claims to love you but doesn’t tell you the Truth, correct you when you go wrong, pets you when you’re treading the paths of unrighteousness, hugs you when your attitude is filthy, hmm please run, that person does not Love you. And vice versa, if you Love yourself as God loves you, Unconditionally, You will tell yourself the Truth and walk in righteousness as you were Born Again to do.

BORN OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.

For God so loved the world, that He made a WAY. And for ALL who will believe… They will be born Anew, possessed by Unending Life.

– It all began with Unconditional Love.

“Beloved let us love one another, for love is of God and anyone who Loves is born of God and knows God, He that does not Love, Does not know God For God is Love…”
1John 4:7&8

You are not of this world!!! I am not of this world!!!! ( say it). So we can’t afford to entangle ourselves with the yoke of bondage that obeying the Lusts of this world brings, rather we should stand fast in the liberty which Christ has given us in His kingdom. What is the Kingdom of God?

  1. Righteousness (The New Nature of Christ in you that you are enabled by the Holy Spirit to express Freely in the earth)

  2. Peace (The nature of God in us that enables us Rest in His promises and Trust in His Word with the whole heart)
    and

  3. Joy in the Holy Spirit (Not being moved by circumstances but constantly drawing Hope and strength from the Living Water of Gods Love that Flows from within you by The spirit of God.).

Understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ should not only be heard from your lips and known in your head but should be seen in your life.

See, in this place there is no law or fear of punishment and people will hate you, people will hate you for Living a set apart life, people will call you names, people will lash out at you, tell you you’re overdoing the righteousness, but you don’t need to fight them , In 2corinthians 4: 3 – 4, you have been given an  insight as to what the problem is, you know

But if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case, the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ,
So what do you do? You do the needful and pray for people. Pray that the eyes of their understanding will be open” so that  they can see the free gift we all Have in God through Christ Jesus. This is how to Live in Love.

Your life cannot be guided by this and someone will come and threaten you with fear of punishment. This is where love is perfect and Unconditional and far reaching Only in the confines of The Kingdom of God.
There is Freedom in Christ… Literally, I cant stress this enough.

If you dupe somebody and get billions of naira out of the deal or you break a covenant you have with someone nastily or you swindle your way out of speaking the Truth just to save yourself it is not the favour of God, it is unrighteousness and there is an end for all unrighteousness its called death. Death is the end product of everything that is gotten from The kingdom of darkness.

THE KINGDOM INBETWEEN

I’m glad to break it to you, there is NO Kingdom in between.

There is no place for lukewarm, no place of mixing both Kingdoms. To reject light is to accept darkness, to accept light is to reject darkness (I know thats deep church but stay with me :/).

Okay on a more serious note now,  It was in a bid to clarify this that Paul in his 2nd letter to the Corinthians said,

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?”

This is a legit question I ask myself all the time, because there is wisdom in it.  In the place of mixture, the line of holy fire that clearly divides Light and Darkness can be easily ignored.
God has redeemed us through His dear son Christ Jesus to Birth His kingdom in the earth.

There is no middle ground or comfort zone. We all must choose to walk in Righteousness because we have this new nature, His kingdom within us!
You must be proud of who you are in Christ, gingered to Love, gingered to make peace with God in your day to day concerns and interactions ( not tolerate the world ooo but reconcile others to the father in love), gingered to share, gingered in kindness.

A believer in Christ Jesus who understands, “I am A new Creature, I am not of the fallen world, I am not of the kingdom of darkness, I have been born into The marvelous light of Jesus Christ!” Will be excited to live in righteousness, refusing to make excuses for Unrighteous desires especially when they rise up in you, this transformation is spiritual being made manifest in the earth! It was Paul in his letter to the Galatians 5 who said,

“The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions…..”

This is just the fact. Darkness and light don’t see eye to eye at all! This is why your Choice is important,
So verse 6 says,

“But if you are Led by the spirit, you are not under the law”..

You need to allow the Holy spirit Lead you. its a conscious thing. You’re not a robot, you have a will, the Holy spirit is not evil, he will not manipulate you to do the will of God.
You will Choose to mortify the desires of the flesh so that righteousness can be made manifest in the earth through your life.

May God keep us even as we continue to yield to His lead and may our lives continue to be a testimony that indeed Christ came in the flesh and we are overcomers in Him.

Blessed Is He Who Comes In “THE NAME”

THE GENESIS 1 OF ALL CREATION

In the beginning was the WORD and the WORD was with God and The Word was God. John 1:1

All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. John 1:3

In Him was Life and the Life was the LIGHT of men. John 1:4

And the LIGHT shines in the darkness and the darkness does not understand it! John 1:5

LETS ESTABLISH THE NEED AND SOLUTION FIRST.

“For all men have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”.  -Romans 3:23

By this we know that of ourselves we only deserve death. Like death unto the grave, then whatever is below the grave. ( that would be hell by the way. :Eternal Darkness)

This is the verdict for the soul/person who is born in the Sin nature and remains in it.

                   BUT

Light has come into the world to redeem that man who will BELIEVE, not just hear the story and say ” oh yes that talk about Jesus, I believe it”,

But a person will have BELIEF so strong, however small, he will be transformed in his very nature. These ones will become what Paul Called the NEW CREATION! That’s a Creation that never existed prior to when they BELIEVE.

This Belief  will not be of them but of God.

For God is Faithful and Just to forgive us our sins (Old Nature) and cleanse us from all Unrighteousness (its fruit)

 -1 John1:9

By receiving this good report of LIGHTS  arrival in the earth they will have FAITH.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17

The Word Is God! The LIGHT Who came into the world in the person of Christ Jesus to Redeem man from the Curse of Darkness i.e Sin and death.
So Faith comes from the very PERSON of God, Faith Is His Nature. And we have faith only by Hearing and Hearing Christ Jesus.

So the more we Hear and hear, the more we BELIEVE, the more we are Transformed in our soul and body.

N.B: The word Hear is translated from the Hebrew text SHEMA which means: Listen and obey, Listen closely, Hear and respond, Pay attention to or Focus On. See SHEMA graphic illustration word study.

Now Notice those who believe receive The New Life of the Kingdom in the spirit (Heavens). This is why Jesus taught His disciples not to look up or out there for the kingdom of God but within themselves for they have received Him and now Believe. Jesus also taught His disciples to pray thus To Our Father In Heaven,

“….. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

-Matthew 6:10

So next time you pray the Lords prayer, make it a little more personal…

“…. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in this earth (beat your chest) as it is done in the heavens”

For the flesh is of the earth and can only be Transformed by the Finished work of Christ as in the Heavens, let it be so here. Amen.

Now! Back To THE NAME

When I think about Uchechukwu Nwachukwu, I do not simply imagine words spelt out on a blank surface,

A person comes to my mind.

A living, breathing, walking, talking person in this earth, comes to my mind.

Uchechukwu Nwachukwu is my Friend, Uchechukwu Nwachukwu is His Name and His Name is His person. This is Who He Is.

Jesus told His disciples that they will do all manner of great and wonderful things in His Name! And only in His Name did they have authority to do all He sent them out to do, All Glory to God. (Seriously its so cool check it out in Matthew 10)

But there is one peculiar thing that we can notice about all of Christ’s called, abandoned all to follow, taught and sent ones, They Believed, Rejoicing even unto the point of Physical Death.

Now before you get all gingered Up, Know This…

This was not Normal Guys, No one just wakes up to a story of How Light came into the world to destroy darkness and suddenly decides that His Life ambition is to be a Martyr.

So what was it?! What made these ordinary men so different? And why is death so Inevitable? Jesus said

” verily I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and DIES it abides alone, But if it Dies, it produces many seeds” – John 12:24

Imagine if we eat all the seeds, and eliminate all the eggs in the world, (its a tall order but just imagine it) For a time, it will seem as though there is life but as time goes by there will be silence in the earth. Death Without New life is extinction.

So basically for New life/much fruit to be produced, a seed must first go into the Earth. Be it the ground or a female. This is the principle of Death and Resurrection.

But instead of just Death unto the grave and Hell, This Time its a Death unto New Life.

So the earth (man) ceases to be a grave because in Christ it (his heart) becomes good soil.

At this point, if you’re  still nursing ideas of martyrdom I suggest you keep reading, This isn’t over yet.

Now Paul made a disturbing statement in Galatians 2:20

“I am crucified with Christ, ” he said

“Nevertheless I Live,” hmmmm

“Yet not I!”  Say what now?!

“But Christ Liveth in me” owkayy…

” and the life I now live in the flesh, I live by THE FAITH OF THE SON OF GOD”  🙂

“Who loved me and gave himself for me”  wow!

Paul was a dead man even before he finally exited this World physically. Or as Christ will say “went to sleep” for God is not the God of the dead but of the living.

Stay with me people

That would explain why Isaiah though he was cut in two with a wooden saw, peter was crucified upside down ‘on request by the way’, Paul died many times by stoning, wild beasts and what not, John was soaked in boiling oil, didn’t die and was later banished to Patmos because “annoying” and many other records of ordinary men unafraid, unashamed and unmoved will not recant in the face of persecution.

For they came not In Their Individual names, But in  THE NAME of the One Who Lives Forever!

{Praise Break!}

So by the FAITH OF GOD in them, they were made testimonies of Eternal Life even in the World destined for destruction.

(It was not just a new testament thing, God has shown Himself Graceful, Merciful, Mighty, Strong and Awesome in and Through His people right from the beginning of Time God did not just start this 2000yrs ago, He has always been and will always be Loving and Faithful to His People)

Now,

“Arise! Shine! For your Light is come and the glory of the Lord is Risen Upon You! ”

This is where you and I come in…

“… Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in the earth, in me, my soul and body as its already done in the heavens”,

where is heaven? The spirit of God, The kingdom of God, His Reign as Lord and King in You first, then in the earth as a whole. Get it? It starts from within you!

Doesn’t stop there, Transforms the whole World until Darkness is driven out by LIGHT.

“… Revelation 11:15

15And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

Quick Question, where is your name in the scripture? 🙂

I’d show you,

Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

1Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is youra life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry….. Colossians 3.

Want to be a martyr? Here’s a good place to start, Understand that you have Died To Your Flesh in Christ!

Now before you get any bright ideas and start cutting off arms and legs let’s get this straight.

Jesus when He Rose from the Grave! Glory to God!, Told His Disciples

And I paraphrase simply

“If I don’t go and send my Spirit to you, you’d Never Be Me! And I Know you’d miss me but Don’t worry  My Spirit only Speaks of Me, He will Guide you into all of Me! (Truth) I have testified of my father and you must do same, Testify of me because You have been with me from the beginning, through Death and Resurrection” – John 15:26, 16: 5-8

To Testify is To Be and To Live As Christ Did in the Earth as it is in Heaven, Just as His Disciples did! -Living Testimonies.

So to Die on your own, thats suicide.

We are only able to Mortify this flesh and its deeds being sanctified ,our lives laid down as a sacrifice by the Help of the Holy Spirit of Truth sent From the father Himself.

God is with us to see us through it all.

His promise to never leave or forsake us is True!

“So walk in the spirit therefore and of the spirit you will bear good fruit of The Spirit” Gal 5.

Talk about being good soil. 😀

Now In Christ you have right to ascend unto Eternal Life You are destined to Die, But in Christ Unto Life, You Cease to Live Now He Lives In You Through You, You Live In the Flesh Now But By His Faith Unto Transformation its Galatians 2:20 all over again!

Your Pass into the Life of God Is THE NAME CHRIST! JESUS! His NAMe is HIS PERSON!

Not just words you say with your mouth, but your BEING.

“You also must testify of me….” Jesus said, He meant your Life, Now His own and No longer yours! Glory to God.

Remember FAITH is of God, Faith does not Fail. So this is why we do not lean on Strength that is born of a nature destined to die instead we SHEMA and SHEMA The WORD.

no more gloomy defeated Living now, Arise and shine .

“…. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of Righteousness, Peace and Joy in The Holy Spirit!”

Therefore I cease to be __________________ (insert name here.) Because Christ Is and

BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN CHRIST JESUS.

WORDS OF LIFE

With a bleeding pen we write,
No; we create.
Words so structured they can’t go unnoticed,
Words so piercing they cut through barriers.
We speak through ink and white sheet,
Our words warm every cold feet.

It’s not just a way of expression,
No; these words of ours are coined to
kick off depression,
bring liberation,
and give boldness for every affliction.

When we speak through written words, lives are transformed.
When we pen down our thoughts, minds are reformed.
We don’t just exhort,
No; we hope to give the very Life we have received.

A Life that gives joy in times of despair,
A Life that never goes stale nor needs repair,
A Life that keeps us burning bright in the dark,
A life that never gives up on us or turn it’s back.

Like a fountain our words flow unending.
Like the wind our words go forth ever flowing.
Like rain our words pour down unearthing thorns of bitterness,
planting a seed that brings forth fruitfulness.

Words unveiling the Father’s love,
Words revealing the one who exchanged His life for the sake of love.
Our words never dwindle, because they are freighted with the power of God.
We are a force and our words spread like wild fire.

We are an army
We are a Team
CHRIST is our message

C.S LEWIS: A biography

I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen, not only because I see it but
because by it I see everything else …

C.S Lewis

Quick Facts
Full Name: Clive Staples Lewis
Born: November 29, 1898
Died: November 22, 1963 (aged 64)
Work: Writer, Apologist, Poet, Scholar
Most Popular Works: The Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters.

Known by friends and family as Jack (a self given name he adopted up after his dog
Jacksie was killed by a car). You could say he was a man born before his time in many
ways or rather still a man who launched the world to new times by his rich imagination
and rigid faith.

Born in Belfast, Ireland (present day Northern Ireland) into the well positioned family of
Albert and Florence Lewis. As a young lad, his imagination ran free with a particular
fascination of anthropomorphic animals, he and his brother Warnie soon created the
world of Boxen, populated and driven by talking animals. His appetite to read was
stirred and well watered by his parents who stocked the house full of books, his dad
being a solicitor and his mom a graduate of the Royal University of Ireland (a fit quite
rare for women in those days). Lewis himself being a bit prodigy himself was reading by
age three and by five had begun writing stories, he fed extensively and voraciously on
those books, he writes in his autobiography, Suprised by Joy “endless books… There
were books in the study, books in the dinning room, books in the cloakroom, books (two
deep) in the great bookcase on the landing, books in a bedroom, books piled as high as
my shoulder in the cistern attic, books of all kinds” and none was off limits to him.
Life took a not so pleasant turn when his brother Warnie was sent off to boarding
school in England, leaving the young Lewis alone, he became somewhat reclusive,
spending more and more time in books and his imaginary world of dressed animal and
knights in armor. Things went even more sour when he turned 10 and his mother died
of Cancer, he became even more driven into himself and his books, his father never
really fully recovered and this led both boys to feel even more estranged from their
dad. His mom’s death planted a seed of doubt in God, he reasoned that God, if not
cruel, was at least a vague abstraction. About five years down that line around 1912 (in
the tender teen age of 15) and with the additional influence of his boarding school
(where his father had now enrolled him) and, Lewis abandoned the Christian faith and
became an avowed atheist, he later described his young self as being paradoxically
“angry with God for not existing”.

By September of 1914 Lewis was sent to Great Bookham, Surrey, to be privately tutored
by W.T. Kirkpatrick, this man had a tremendous effect upon the young Lewis, he
introduced him to classics in Greek, Latin and Italian literature. Being a tutor that must
see result he helped Lewis learn how to criticize and analyze, taught him how to think,
speak and write logically. After nearly three years with Kirkpatrick Lewis had grown in
bounds and leaps in his literary academic prowess, this showed in his success in the
scholarship examinations at Oxford and later in his outstanding performance at
University College, grabbing highest honours in honour moderations, greats and
English. His hardpressing mentor also helped him reinforce his atheistic beliefs, but his
admission to Oxford and the associates he would soon make would cause the budding
Lewis to rethink his God-void universe.

He entered the world of Oxford in 1917 and in a sense he never left, despite the call to
fight in World war 1 and his professorship later in life at Cambridge, he always
maintained his home and friends in Oxford. During World war 1 he and his college
roommate Paddy Moore, made promises to each other, that if either of them should
die in the war, the other would take care of the deceased’s family. Paddy Moore died,
Lewis kept his word and took care of Paddy’s mother, after completing his first degree
in 1920, Lewis decided to share the same lodging with Paddy Moore’s family so that he
could more carefully look out for their needs, this kind gesture got Lewis outside of
himself and taught him patience. Soon the books The everlasting man by G.K.
Chesterton and Phantastes by George MacDonald began to dig through his stony
atheistic heart, he would later write of the book Phantastes “what it actually did to me
was to convert, even baptize…my imagination”

The years went on but distress in the stony heart of Lewis only kept increasing, friends
from his student and post student life like Owen Barfield and Nevill Coghill often
pounced on the logic of Lewis’ atheism. He would later meet two more Christians with
whom he became close friends; J.R.R Tokien (author, Lord of the Rings) and Hugo
Dyson. Eventually the two paths converged in Lewis’ mind: one was reason and the
other intuition, he vigorously resisted conversion, noting that he was brought back into
Christianity like a prodigal, “kicking, struggling, resentful, and darting his eyes in every
direction for a chance to escape”. He painted his final struggle to come to God in his
book Suprised by Joy, “You must picture me alone in that room in Magdalen[College,
Oxford], night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my
work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet.
That which I greatly feared had at last come upon me. In the Trinity term of 1929 I gave
in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the
most dejected and reluctant convert in all England”

After his conversion to Theism in 1929, Lewis converted to Christianity in 1931, after a
lengthy talk and late night walk with his close friends Tokien and Hugo Dyson. He
became a firm member of the Church of England -somewhat to the disappointment of
Tolkien, who had hoped he would join the Catholic church.
The second world war, proved to be a set time for C.S. Lewis, he spoken on radio from
1941 to 1943 by the BBC while the city was under periodic air raids, these broadcasts
were widely received and ministered greatly to the people, also increasing the
popularity of Lewis. After the war in 1951 he declined a honour by George VI as
Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in order to avoid association with
political issues.

It is interesting to note that with the increase of Lewis fame came other pressures,
numerous invitations to entertain guests, grant interviews, give lectures and preach
sermons. And even though he felt called by God to write, he likewise felt it was
required of him to counsel all those who came all the way to his home. As his books
became popular he was flooded by letters, and because he believed that it was Gods
will for him to answer most of this mail himself stating that there were “no ordinary
people” he took his time to write with care to each correspondent regardless of age,
education, or place in society, needless to say this consumed many hours each week.
Joy entered his life in 1956, literally. Joy Davidman, an American writer also a convert
from Atheism to Christianity became Mrs Lewis. She and her two teenaged kids
changed C.S. Lewis’ life for the better. His happiness can be seen in a note he wrote to a
friend soon after they got married “it’s funny having at 59 the sort of happiness most
men have in their twenties… ‘Thou hast kept the good wine till now’.” She brought him
love, companionship and tow stepson with all its accompanying drama, she also
encouraged him to renew his writing of apologetics. Unfortunately his Joy was short
lived as she died of Cancer 4 years into their most blissful marriage. Lewis was quite
devastated by this loss and describes his experience of bereavement in his book A Grief
Observed, he expressed his feelings in such a raw and personal manner that he
originally released it under the pseudonym N. W Clerk to keep readers from associating
the book with him. Funny enough, many friends recommended the book to Lewis as a
method of dealing with his own grief.

C.S. Lewis was a reputed Scholar, prolific writer and noted Novelist who infused Biblical
themes in his story lines, his novel, The Pilgrim’s Regress following John Bunyan’s style
in The Pilgrims Progress was the first of Christian publications he would make and more
were sure to follow. The Chronicles of Narnia in particular, which has been adopted
both into feature films and programs carries the biblical theme of Christ (Aslan in this
case) who basically gives his life for the salvation of those He loves and comes back to
life again. His book, Mere Christianity was voted best book of the twentieth century by
Christianity Today in 2000, he has been called “The Apostle to the Skeptics” due to his
approach to faith, presenting a reasonable case for Christianity, other books in this class
include, The Problem of Pain and Miracles. In 2008 he was ranked by The Times as the
eleventh on their list of “the 50 greatest British writers since 1945”
Lewis died at the Kilns on November 22, 1963, buried beside his brother who passed on
10 years later, he authored more than 70 titles, including works of science fiction,
fantasy, poetry, letters, autobiography and Christian apologetics, Lewis’ book sales are
reported to be more than 2 million annually.
