A LETTER TO MY OLD RUGGED CROSS

Dear old rugged cross
Blessed are you among wood and timber
Because on you rested the greatest sacrifice ever
On that night at Golgotha
On you was my Jesus crucified
And now I stand justified
Before the God of my salvation and life

Dear old rugged cross
It hurts to tell you that many are lost
And those who remain cling to a civilised cross
They have forsaken the ancient landmark
While on a self-satisfaction task
Ignorantly falling to damnation on a fast track

Yes you may have seen some violence
But not as much as there is in my presence
For the love of men wax cold
And iniquity is in abundance
The time of true faith fades away
And religion, false belief finds its way
And unfortunately, the Christians refuse to take their place

I must confess you are quite heavy
And I might stumble and fall on this journey
But all my cares on Jesus I lay
Dear old rugged cross
On you, I sacrifice all my flaws
As I wait for my Lord’s applause

Yours sincerely,
The Young Believer

Regenerate Now

Hello, My name is Niel and these are the ChristaPoet Freestyle Sessions. This year, ChristaPoet wants to give you a special perspective to our freestyles. At first, some of these poems were published as stand-alone pieces. But in actuality, each poem is an untitled part of a freestyle session. Each freestyle session is given a topic for the poems to address.

Normally, I would take us back…

We were at July 2021. But I have decided that we going through poems pretty fast. Plus, do you really enjoy such a long of poems?

Who knows?

Please comment.

So today, I am taking us to February 25th, which was just Last Friday. The topic was
“REGENERATION”.

I started at 9:36 AM:

I heal cause I dwell with the Christi
Stab wounds from the practicality
And I do not stop to speedometer, I just get with it
And Yahweh it is
who took the U from my Mourning, F from my Falling, and love is my winnings

And Godswill-sama landed this revert at 9:50 AM:

Quiet nights tell tales of noisy days lost in the silence of rested busyness. The death of a day is so comforting that we look forward to doing nothing as we lay in surrender to our humanity in hopes that we will rise again. We will work again. We will hope again and the day will come again.

And there, at 9:51 AM, was Ade:

I pray my heart is fertile enough,
To plant seeds of faith in my mind,
And water it with prayers and words from the Bible,
I pray dead cells receives a fresh breath of life,
Stones removed from her line of sight,
If three days was enough to conquer hell and buy my salvation,
I bet it’s enough for a miracle to grow,
I pray one way or another,
It’s enough to witness a surgery,
Performed on my Mum’s eyes,
By the hands of He who formed man from clay,
I pray He regenerates her eyes using spit and mud,
For my knees won’t hold again,
Tired from lifting the heavy burden on my shoulders,
So I cry for help on bent knees,
Building lines of communication to God’s ears
I hope this prayer build’s my Mum’s faith
And if I don’t see a miracle performed before Monday,
I know He’s waiting in the theatre room,
Making sure no mistake is done as,
My mum goes through surgery to correct her eyes,
One way or another, I know she will have her sight,
Fully regenerated, fully healed,
My trust is built on nothing but God’s word
And this is my reality!
A prayer for Mum!!!

And this particular spurt change the group’s sentiment about freestyling that day. It had become a testy matter. Eveyone began to pray for Ade. Ofcourse I won’t post the prayers.

At 9:53 AM, I continued:

I threw a smile to my foe and he said,”Cheers.”
I have lived with my pain for a few years
Onlookers point fingers at the pointless
“Do you want to be healed?” I said, “Lord, Yes!”

And I strayed, all the dogs came for megabytes
No time when I no dey take prayer fight
Back to back victories and a can of Sprite
If you’re thinking Chibuikem, you are very right

I will stop here for today. There were 18 poems from this day…just for the record.

The Forested desert

Its appearance was like a desert
Burning hot and bare in projection
I was already heading that way
So I’d rather take a look at it myself

The closer I got, the clearer I could see
Little green blades spouting out of the seemingly hardened clay
Different colours, shapes and sizes of flowers were opening up
The sound of life was faint but loud enough to be heard.
And the dry air was now blessed with the fragrance of tranquillity

Each step unfolded pleasant surprises;
Suddenly, those blades had grown so tall
Held up by thick brown stands
They spread their Afros like umbrellas against the harsh rays
Colours were lifting with wings and their chirping was high pitched albeit pleasant to the ears

When I looked down, instead of a shadow I saw my reflection
Clearly staring back at me upon the flowing waters – so clear and Pure
It followed a path as though controlled by the melody from a Piper’s pipe
And out of it came cold peaceful air that filled the Forest

Oh, I just called it a ‘Forest
I could vividly remember it was a desert I saw
So dry it could crack a shadow casted on it
Right there, I couldn’t even see my shadow
For the rays of the Sun barely pierced through the thick afro leaves
And oh, what beautiful glitters it formed on the water surface.

It’s a transformation I thought only existed in Disney world
It happened so fast yet slow enough that I could have sworn I was there for hours
But it was so real
So peaceful, so cool, so fertile and so perfect as it appeared before me

“Until the spirit be poured
upon us from on high,
And the wilderness be a fruitful field,
And the fruitful field be counted for a forest.”

It wasn’t just a dream,
it is real.

IN ALL THINGS?

We don’t want to bother God
Says man made of mud
So we bottle up what we ought not
Leaving our mind in knots
You receive not for you ask not
What to pray about you say?
All things my brother, so you don’t become a prey
Everything my sister, on every blessed day
So Unfriend anxiety
Cast away its ray
Put on Christ’s piety
And your armor of faith
Whatever it is
Grand or small
Possible, impossible
Serious or minor
Pray about them all
Yes! In all things by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving…
So go on your knees
Lift up those hands
Put your hands together
Lie flat on your tummy
Stand on your feet
Sit on the floor
Whichever position you choose, just shut out the noise
Surrender all
Cast it to God
Receive His rod
Believe it’s done
Make a loud noise
Wait till it comes

Parent Thing

Hail Mary, full of Grace…

Tell mothers their children are gifts with gifts in them. Not slaves who who will give birth to more slaves.

The Lord is with you, blessed art thee…

Tell fathers the world is changing, toxic masculinity is not therapy for the trauma.

Amongst women, and blessed is the fruit…

Tell children; your parents are gods. Adore and revere them. But never be afraid to tell them how you feel or pursue your dream. Deal with your trauma before bringing another kid into this world. Honour and respect all humans equally, God is the greatest, and madu abuho chukwu.

Of your womb…

Parenting is a partnership between parents and their kids. And like all partnerships, as long as the other partner is rational enough to think, their opinion on matters that concern them should be considered, too. You can be a good man, a good woman, but if your kids are not doing well, you will be tagged a bad parent. What does it tell you? The child holds a stake in this parenting business. Consider, build and uplift them. Not entirely in the conventional way, but in the way that is convenient for you and them.

now and at the hour of our death, amen

HOPE

I walk into Mum’s room
She has laid out
Another beautiful dress
For me with flowers for
My hair.
– You don’t need a dress to make
You feel beautiful. You are beautiful,
Loved and blessed and that’s something
You have to know, for yourself.
No matter how many times you feel alone
And forgotten, don’t forget to come to my
Front door, this is always Home –

The smile on my face bursts into a beautiful
radiance; the joy of a thousand hearts.
