WHAT’S THE POINT OF BEING A CHRISTIAN, IF IT LEAVES US NO BETTER THAN ANY OTHER PERSON ON THIS PLANET OF OURS?

I think that this is the big question that must bug us, if we’re really serious about our lives, and the whole point of being ‘saved by God’ and ‘transformed by him’. If we are unable to look ourselves in the mirror and tell ourselves the truth about ourselves, it may just be the case that we’re just playing with our lives and our lives matter too much for us to simply spend it on a merry-go-round circus, deceiving ourselves till we’ve kicked the bucket.

The essence of this piece is to shout out the words of truth as loud as I can, because truth is all that our life is worth. I really mean this.

WHY CAN’T TRUTH SET OUR HEARTS ON FIRE?
Why should we be content with living the tradition, doing things to ‘fulfill all righteousness’? Are our journeys to our local churches just trips to see faces or sit in pews on the ‘right days of the week’? Do we consume Christmas chickens with relish that have more to do with our pleasure alone, or bake cakes on Easter without remembering why Easter is even marked? Do we ever stop to remember that the God who created everything, from the tiniest of microbes to the greatest of spiral galaxies, is at this very moment closer to us than our very breath…even in that secret corner where our emotions and thoughts wildly rage?

Whatever happened to the faith we were handed by our predecessors, some of whom had to give their lives, dying horrible deaths to keep the eternal words from fading from people’s hearts? Was it not for the same faith that God’s messengers were beheaded, hanged, stabbed, crucified head-down and transversely, dragged to pieces in the streets, burnt and buried alive? In only a few decades from the death and resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ, many of our brothers and sisters (I do mean our BROTHERS AND SISTERS) were being thrown to the lions as lunch for the beasts in gladiator shows. The spectators watched them die the most sickening death possible, and laughed at their apparent helplessness. But it did not deter God’s children! They were so willing to die for our lord, that on the walls of the dungeons in which they were kept on death row, they wrote the words ‘vita!,vita!’ or ‘life!, life!’ in anticipation of what they KNEW was waiting for them. UNENDING LIFE.

And our love for one another. Why let divisions as flimsy as denomination, ethnicity and political affiliations rob us of the unity in love that we should have? Why destroy what Jesus built with his blood? Where is our love? Are we so aloof of the fact that it is our unity in love that lets the world know that we are really special, really HIS CHILDREN?

Truth will remain, no matter what lie becomes the fad or modern point of view. Let our hearts and minds be open to God. Let His truth be the driving force of our lives. Forget the distracting noise of the world. LET TRUTH SET OUR HEARTS ON FIRE FOR HIM!
