Remembering

I was recounting to my colleague one of my childhood memories of traveling with my mother, and why it was so pleasant.

I am from the riverine area of Nigeria, a proud Ijaw woman. I can’t really speak my language, but that has never killed the flame of pride that kindles when I hear it spoken, when I see my culture expressed, when I breathe the air of my land after being away for a long time, and when I feel its waters. This memory is about the waters.

As a child, traveling between Bonny Island and Port Harcourt was one of my favorite things to do with my mum. Aside from the snacks that came as a bonus package, the way the boat danced on the waves, the stories that abounded, the fishing ports flanking the sea, the body warmth from being packed together in a small boat (four to five people per bench, and about five benches per boat), and the excitement of traveling when it rained all added to the beauty of the experience. But this memory is about when it rains while traveling at sea.

The commercial boats were open-topped, so when it rained during the journey, a large canopy would be spread over the passengers. Those sitting at the edges were burdened with the responsibility of holding it down, keeping those in the middle safe from the wind and the heavy raindrops. As a child, I would make beats in my head, following the rhythm of the raindrops hitting the canopy. But this memory is about the driver, who sails even when the passengers are covered up.

While everyone stays hidden under the canopy, shielded from the harsh weather, the driver stays put, navigating the wind, the waves, and the rain. He literally weathers the storm for the sake of his passengers—and for his stomach’s sake, as that is how his income flows. His passengers have to trust that they are in good hands; whatever happens out in the open is up to the driver to navigate until the rain stops. But this write-up isn’t really about my memories, however beautiful I perceive them to be.

This is about the rain and my ark. Like the passengers on that boat, I can’t control the vessel, nor can I control the weather, but I can control where I place my trust. So, I trust He who stirs my ark, because if I know nothing else, I know I am His priority. He will do everything to keep me afloat and on the right path, no matter how much rain pours, how loudly the thunder claps, or how hard the hail beats. While that happens, maybe I will make a song from those sounds and dance with the boat—because that, too, is all part of the experience.

Christ Garden

Holy Spirit,
My source of joy,
My wisdom and peace.
My Lord, You have empowered me with Your love.
Darkness covers the land,
Tyranny and evil have risen;
But I am untouched,
Walking in Your light like a flame of fire.
Emmanuel, my King,
You are the Light of the world,
And in Your light, I see the light.
Christ is the ocean of living water;
I am like a tree planted in Christ’s Garden.
My leaves blossom,
And in all I do, I prosper with ease.
I am successful,
I am fruitful,
But not by my own power.
Christ in me is my hope and glory.
I am strong in the LORD.
All my beauty and fruitfulness
Are to the glory of Abba Father,
The God of Abraham,
The God whose love endures forever.

Waiter

Lord, I lack the sadness needed to be straightforward
Some who know the facts will shrug like, ‘This Coward!’
But I only send these scream-shots to you
I will alley-oop my cares to you,
Lord, you are calm and veto
Encore, until I’m Phillip’d to a new location

Lord, I lack the angst to call storms a problem
What I ask for Lord is grace to be ardent
Grace to be fervent, you are my extent
Straightened by the Word, I recall when I was hell-bent
And if you weren’t backing us up, we’d be fronting
Joking
And all the whole being eaten while your mercy kept us breathing – Ahhhhh

Lord, I…
Look to you when I count my trophies
Souls you snatched out the fire
How can coals be riches?
I rely on your plan, but this path is treacherous

Niel,
Learn to close your eyes and let the silence permeate
Babies bring immense joy, but they’ll make you wait
Now relate, to how you ghost and resurrect at your behest
If I’m patient with my kids, you should copy and paste
Love them like I love you
Sacrifice and pray too
Let no taste deceive you
Let your mercy shine through
And when they annoy you, while saying they love you
Do that thing that I do
Give their good a good zoom

And wait…

Lord, I lack the nonchalance for this
Then feel; walk the storm and let the water mix
I told you long ago that My grace is more than enough for this
Ha!
Watch and pray and do not faint to this
The joy has developed so you have all the strength to love through this

Diss
Oh! to slash my way through all of this
But I know your way is better, so I’ll wait for it
Cook this story how you please
Ease, never was among your promises
After all, you’re with me land, air or seas
You send your word and Ctrl-A-Del disease
And you know the whole path from the start of each
I will wait, Lord, your whisper is enough wings

ROOTING DEEP

There’s power in staying rooted,
In leaning into God’s word,
Where roots stretch deep in quiet places,
Unseen, but steady and sure.

The seed is planted in faith,
Watered with patience and trust,
No rush, no shortcuts—
Just the process of becoming.

It’s not flashy, not instant,
Not for those chasing quick results,
But for those willing to wait,
To trust, to grow, to endure.

Like the coconut tree that stands tall,
Bearing fruit all year long,
The waiting is hard, the work is slow,
But the harvest is always worth it.

Oak Season

As clear as day I hear it
The sound of a raging storm
My thoughts unclear as the cloud
My brows knitted in bewilderment

We spoke words
And this day we waited upon
The unveiling of what came as a prompting
The head start we need

Where did we m…
Stop
A stern interruption
Like lightning it flashed before my eyes

Leafs falling from a 100 feet
Roots absorbing water from a river
Branches unmoved by the wind
A trunk as large as the Pompey pillar

As clear as day I hear it
It’s Oak season
Rejoice
It has come

ONESIMUS

That you might receive him forever, no longer as a slave—a beloved brother… Philemon 1: 15-16

I’m a fugitive fleeing from punishment
A slave mortgaging with my destiny
Transecting my soul with transgression

A man finds me whose father
sentenced to death two thousand years ago
Says his name is Grace and he won’t let me go

Wraps warm hands around me
till his love fills me to overflow
Like rainwater filling a cistern

” I died“, he says but now I live forever
And if you let me, I can wipe away your past too, forever.”

Broken ceramics

I have faint memories of my mother
I remember her as a cup
How she always found a way to hold it all together, just before she leaks
Trickles of water falling beside her straight slender figure, ceramic
Till the day daddy pushed her from the table and she broke
Pieces of her piercing little me, till one little pointy mummy tore through my left eye

Now I half see.
Deformed, they think I am
But with what hands would you erase memories’ scars?
With what hands would you race memories cars?
The speed limit of the past experiences dangling in your face before you even make the obvious decision
Those past experiences
Become the obvious decisions and so

I still cannot resist slender girl
Especially when they comment on my eyes
The one blue pupil that’s always learning new ways to shatter ceramic;
Hearts.
My past, present
How I with my fingers have rewritten daddy’s story on many lives.
If they never let go of their past
I’ll always be present, right on time
Before their next decision.

I wonder
If mummy would be proud that the vengeance I sought for her has made me Potter many more ceramics;
Broken
From tables, broken tablets, broken tables of laws
I have become ten plagues walking and everyone wants to chase from Egypt till they drown in a pool of their own tears tricking when they are full.
Maybe we give too much power to all the hurts that have Moses’ed their ways into our lives, dear lions forget about your pride and let his people go!

Finance peace,
UN-till the ridges you’ve prepared to plant hate
Until its roots can’t take in your heart any room.
So that any room you enter.
You’ll leave memories of water. Washing clean from dirt smeared hands, hearts, spirits, bodies, minds. Ceramics.
Set this on your heart
And set the captives free from Egypt.

God has called you, now lead, and let his people go.
